GIFOSA Registry For Global OSA Data
Published 22/12/2025 Updated 08/02/2026
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent and underdiagnosed condition with significant implications for respiratory, cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurocognitive health. Despite its global impact, comprehensive and harmonized data on OSA remain limited, fragmented, and unevenly distributed across regions. To address this gap, GIFOSA is developing the GIFOSA Registry for Global OSA Data, an international initiative designed to support data-driven research, clinical improvement, and policy development worldwide.
The GIFOSA Registry is envisioned as a standardized, collaborative platform that collects high-quality, real-world data on OSA across diverse healthcare systems and populations. By bringing together participating centers, clinicians, and researchers from different regions, the registry aims to capture variations in epidemiology, diagnostic practices, treatment strategies, and patient outcomes. This global perspective is essential for understanding the true burden of OSA and identifying disparities in access to care and treatment effectiveness.
A core objective of the registry is to facilitate the generation of robust evidence to inform clinical practice and guideline development. Standardized data elements will include patient demographics, risk factors, diagnostic methods, disease severity, comorbidities, treatment modalities, adherence, and longitudinal outcomes. Where feasible, the registry may also incorporate patient-reported outcomes and quality-of-life measures, providing a more comprehensive view of the impact of OSA on daily functioning and well-being.
The GIFOSA Registry is designed with flexibility to accommodate different resource settings while maintaining consistency in data definitions and quality standards. Digital infrastructure and secure data management systems will support efficient data entry, storage, and analysis, ensuring compliance with ethical principles, data protection regulations, and local governance requirements. Participation in the registry will be voluntary and based on transparent agreements that respect data ownership and confidentiality.
Beyond research, the registry serves as a tool for quality improvement and benchmarking. Participating centers will be able to compare their practices and outcomes with aggregated regional and global data, identify gaps in care, and implement targeted improvements. Over time, insights from the registry may help optimize diagnostic pathways, enhance treatment adherence, and support more personalized approaches to OSA management.
At the policy level, the GIFOSA Registry provides an evidence base to inform health authorities and stakeholders about the scale and impact of OSA. Reliable global data can support advocacy efforts, resource allocation, and the integration of OSA into broader noncommunicable disease and sleep health strategies.
Aligned with GIFOSA’s mission to advance awareness, education, and best practices in obstructive sleep apnea, the GIFOSA Registry for Global OSA Data represents a cornerstone initiative for international collaboration. By fostering data sharing, scientific rigor, and collective learning, the registry aims to contribute to improved understanding, better care, and ultimately healthier breathing and sleep for populations worldwide.
