GIFOSA – Global OSA Guideline
Published 22/12/2025 Updated 08/02/2026
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent and often underrecognized condition with significant consequences for respiratory, cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurocognitive health. Variations in diagnostic approaches, treatment strategies, and access to care across regions continue to challenge the delivery of consistent, high-quality OSA management worldwide. In response, GIFOSA has developed the GIFOSA – Global OSA Guideline, an international framework designed to support evidence-based, patient-centered care across diverse healthcare settings.
The GIFOSA Global OSA Guideline provides practical recommendations covering the full continuum of OSA care, including risk assessment, diagnosis, treatment selection, and long-term management. It integrates the best available scientific evidence with expert consensus to ensure clinical relevance and adaptability. Recognizing global diversity in resources and healthcare infrastructure, the guideline offers flexible pathways that can be implemented in both high-resource and low-resource environments.
A core principle of the guideline is early identification and appropriate stratification of OSA severity. Emphasis is placed on standardized screening, accurate diagnosis using validated tools, and individualized treatment planning. Therapeutic options addressed include lifestyle interventions, positive airway pressure therapy, oral appliances, surgical approaches, and adjunctive strategies, with guidance on patient selection and follow-up.
The guideline also highlights the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration, involving primary care providers, sleep specialists, respiratory physicians, dentists, surgeons, and allied health professionals. Patient education, adherence support, and long-term monitoring are emphasized as essential components of effective OSA management.
Developed through international collaboration and regular review, the GIFOSA – Global OSA Guideline aims to harmonize clinical practice, reduce unwarranted variation in care, and support health systems in addressing the growing global burden of OSA. By promoting consistent standards and adaptable implementation, this initiative advances GIFOSA’s mission to improve respiratory and sleep health worldwide—supporting healthier breathing and healthier sleep for all.
